Costs of solar panels and battery storage in Scotland

0% VAT on solar panels and batteries

Solar panels and home battery storage currently benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This is a UK government measure that applies to the supply and installation of eligible solar and battery equipment for residential properties. Any quote we arrange for you will reflect the 0% rate while it remains in force.

What affects the cost of a solar and battery system?

Every home is different, which is why we arrange a free survey rather than quoting a fixed price from a website. The cost of a solar panel and battery storage system depends on several factors that can only be properly assessed on site, and the survey is the honest way to arrive at a figure that reflects your actual property rather than a guess. The main things that influence cost are:

  • Roof size and layout. The number of panels that will fit comfortably on your roof is the single biggest factor. A larger usable roof area means more panels and more generation capacity, which in turn means more hardware.
  • Roof condition and structure. If your roof covering is nearing the end of its life, it may need attention before panels go on. The survey checks the structure and condition so there are no surprises later.
  • Panel type and efficiency. Higher-efficiency panels generate more from the same area, which matters on smaller or partially shaded roofs. The survey helps identify whether the premium is worth paying for your situation.
  • Battery capacity. Batteries are sized in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The right capacity depends on how much surplus your panels are likely to produce and how much your household uses in the evening and overnight.
  • Inverter and electrical work. The inverter is the heart of the system, converting the panels' output into electricity your home can use. Your existing consumer unit (fuse box) may need upgrading to accommodate the system safely.
  • Scaffolding and access. Safe access is essential. Most roof installations require scaffolding, and the height and accessibility of your property affect that cost.

Why we don't publish prices online

You'll notice we don't list package prices on this page, and that's deliberate. A price quoted without seeing your roof, your electrical setup and your usage pattern would be a guess — and guesses are how homeowners end up with systems that are too big, too small, or poorly matched to how they actually use energy. A free survey lets us give you a quote that's specific to your home, so you can make a decision on real numbers.

What your quote includes

A written quote will set out the proposed system, the panels and battery, the inverter, all electrical work, scaffolding and installation labour — with the 0% VAT already applied. There should be no hidden extras. If anything is excluded, it will be noted and explained.

Spreading the cost: finance options

If you'd prefer to spread the cost rather than pay upfront, loans are available, subject to status. We can talk you through what's involved and point you toward lenders who understand home energy improvements. Finance isn't right for everyone, and we'll never push it — it's simply an option to be aware of when you're planning your budget.

We don't quote specific loan amounts or interest figures here, because what's available to you depends on your circumstances and the lender's assessment. The survey and quote come first; if you'd then like to explore finance, we can discuss it in plain terms.

Grants: what is and isn't available in Scotland

It's important to be straight about grants, because there's a lot of confusion online. Through this service there is no grant available for solar panels or home battery storage. The 0% VAT measure is the main government support that currently applies to solar and battery installations for homes, and it runs until 31 March 2027.

Heat pump grant — heat pumps only

A Scottish Government heat pump grant up to £7,500 (up to £9,000 for eligible rural homes), subject to eligibility is available — but it applies to heat pumps only, never to solar panels or batteries. If you're considering a heat pump alongside solar and storage, ask us and we can point you to the right information.

If you've seen references to a boiler upgrade scheme, note that the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to England and Wales only, not to Scotland. We're unable to advise on or process applications for that scheme.

Getting value from your system

The cost of a system isn't just the installation price — it's also about how much value you get from it over time. Three things make the biggest difference to whether a solar and battery system makes sense for a Scottish home:

  • Using what you generate. The more of your solar generation you use directly or store in your battery, the less you buy from the grid. The survey looks at when your household uses energy so the system is sized to match.
  • Choosing the right tariff. A smart tariff that offers cheaper off-peak rates lets you charge your battery overnight and use that stored electricity during the day or evening, even when your panels aren't generating.
  • A system that fits the roof. Over-specifying a system you can't make use of adds cost without adding value. The survey helps right-size the system for your home and your usage.

We won't quote savings figures, payback periods or statistics on this page. Those depend so heavily on your individual circumstances — your roof, your usage, your tariff, the system you choose — that a generic number would be misleading. The free survey is the way to get figures that actually apply to your home.

We arrange free surveys and quotes; installation is by our MCS-certified partner. Loans available, subject to status.

Frequently asked questions

How much do solar panels cost in Scotland?

+
The cost depends on your roof size, the number of panels, the battery capacity you choose and any electrical work needed. Because every home is different we arrange a free survey and provide a written quote that reflects your actual property, with 0% VAT applied until 31 March 2027.

Is there 0% VAT on solar panels and batteries?

+
Yes. Solar panels and home battery storage benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This applies to the supply and installation of eligible equipment for residential properties, and your quote will reflect the 0% rate.

Can I get a grant for solar panels or a battery in Scotland?

+
No grant is available for solar panels or home battery storage through this service. A Scottish Government heat pump grant up to £7,500 (up to £9,000 for eligible rural homes), subject to eligibility, is available for heat pumps only. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to England and Wales only.

Do you offer finance?

+
Loans are available, subject to status. We can discuss spreading the cost in plain terms once you have your survey and quote. We do not quote specific loan amounts or interest rates on this site, as what is available depends on your circumstances and the lender.

Why don't you show prices on the website?

+
A price quoted without seeing your roof, your electrical setup and your usage would be a guess. The free survey lets us give you a specific, written quote for your home so you can decide on real numbers rather than estimates.
